The end-use of the product provides the largest benefits. By the end of 2008, Sodigaz provided LPG access to a total of 75,330 people. The most commonly cited benefits were the amount of time and money saved, as compared to charcoal use. The end-user takes about 60% less time to cook a meal with LPG as opposed to charcoal. This extra time can be spent doing income generating activities, on other chores, for education or leisure. Because it is primarily the women who are responsible both for the cooking and securing the cooking fuel, this also has positive gender equality implications, though they are difficult to quantify.

The use of LPG also has environmental benefits by avoiding deforestation, which is one of the largest environmental concerns in Mali. In order to cook a meal with charcoal, one needs between 4 and 8 kilograms of charcoal, depending on the family size. If each family cooks 2 full meals a day that is 56 and 112 kilograms of charcoal a week per family. This has a major impact on deforestation. Every month Sodigaz sells on average four hundred 2.75 kilogram bottles of the, thirty-five thousand 6 kilogram bottles, three hundred 12.5 kilograms, and one hundred 38 kilograms.

This has a significant impact in minimizing deforestation as well as CO2 emissions. In total, Sodigaz has displaced 28,091 tons of charcoal and 61,855 tons of firewood and offset 3,217 tons of CO2. All of the end-users interviewed, in fact, stated that a benefit of using LPG is environmental awareness and decreased deforestation. They understand the relationship between their use of LPG and their environment.

The switch to LPG does mean that Mali is becoming more dependent on imported gas, minimizing its energy security. The charcoal is produced locally, but is not being sustainably managed and thus would not be able to supply the country in the future. In this case, importation of gas seems to be a better option.

The use of LPG causes emissions, but so does charcoal. In fact, the LPG emissions are much cleaner and cut down on respiratory and eye infections for the end users, mainly women. It is difficult to quantify the value of this, but it does save on medical bills and allows for more productivity due to good health.
